Issuing your employees with workwear is a great opportunity to generate brand awareness. Putting your logo on the different items of clothing makes your workforce instantly stand out and can instill a sense of belonging and pride. It’s an investment worth making for businesses in many different industries and good quality clothing can last a long time.

However, as with everything, all pieces have a lifespan. From rebrands to staff turnover to changes in uniform requirements, you may find yourself with branded workwear that you need to dispose of. Many companies now want to do this in an environmentally friendly way, so we’re here to help.

The uniform is the responsibility of your company

Ensuring all employees return their old uniform whenever they receive new allowance or leave for a new role is important. You should be collecting all old and worn uniforms for a few reasons. Mainly you can ensure the integrity of your brand remains under your control: so uniform items don’t end up worn in places they shouldn’t or by people who have never represented your brand and understand its values. It also ensures your branded corporate wear is less likely to end up in landfill - let’s face it, no one keeps old work shirts!

Specialist materials can be hard to recycle in the traditional way

For some uniforms, especially those made with safety in mind, materials used are difficult to recycle. When in the design phase, deconstruction isn’t always considered. Therefore, if lots of different materials were blended together to make the piece, it is difficult to dissemble. Then traditional recycling becomes next to impossible.

Disposing of your branded workwear

Finding a reputable recycling company that will accept branded and corporate wear is time consuming and complex. It’s important to read the small print as some companies are only able to recycle certain materials and have a percentage target that only X% is actually recycled. Ideally you want to know what happens to anything that isn’t fully recycled and how it is destroyed to the complete end of product life. You don’t want to run the risk of your branded uniform ending up in landfill as it would be detrimental to your brand reputation.
